<![CDATA[WELDEN HARDWARE - Our Blog]]>Thu, 02 May 2024 20:57:21 -0400Weebly<![CDATA[The Ants Are Marching In]]>Tue, 05 Jul 2022 04:00:00 GMThttp://weldenhardware.com/our-blog/the-ants-are-marching-inIn the past few weeks, one of the biggest issues that our customers are needing help with is ants. There are several different types of ants that may be invading our indoor spaces, from the small sweet-eating ants to large carpenter ants.

There is a 2-prong defense that you can perform to keep unwanted insects from migrating into your house. First of all, look around inside. Ants are always looking for water and food, so the most common place you will find ants are in your kitchen and bathroom. You can spray to immediately kill them, but for the most effective means of attack, use a systemic ant killer. This type will attract the pests to the bait for a few days, but they will take it back to their nest and the entire colony will die, even if the colony is outside. We have found that a borax-based ant bait is the most effective, on almost all types of ants.

Outside, you can approach ant deterrents 2 ways. First, treat the perimeter of your foundation with either a granular product or concentrated spray, which should include bifenthren to permethryn. This will help prevent ants and other pests, such as spiders and other insects. And if you see an active colony, don’t disturb it, as it may split into several other colonies and make your job even more difficult. There are outside weatherproof ant baits, similar to the inside ones, containing borax, that will quickly attract the worker ants, and they will carry it back to their nest and the entire colony will soon be gone. Also make sure any bushes, trees or other foliage is at least 3 feet away from your foundation, as that is a very common way for ants to find a pathway into your home.

Carpenter ants, which are similar to termites, won’t been seen right away, they are typically hidden while they are destroying your wood, be it your home, shed, retaining walls and other wooden structures. Carpenter ants don’t eat the wood, but they hollow out their nest areas, and can be as large as 3000 pests. Many times, you won’t even know you have a problem with carpenter ants until major structural damage has already been done. Again, prevention is your best defense, so outside perimeter treatment is your best first line of attack.

We have received so many historical items as well from residents' attics and sheds that has donned our business name over the past 130 years. TV and Facebook interviews, national recognition and just overwhelming accolades from so many people. We were asked why we didn't wait until our 150th - well, we will definitely do a big celebration in 20 more years, but once you're over 100, every decade is a big deal in our industry.
